Legend: It's been known to snow on the Fourth of July in
Klamath Falls.
Status: False.
Discussion: Though many locals firmly believe
in this legend, there's no proof that it has ever snowed in Klamath
Falls on the Fourth of July (at least not in recorded history). Meteorologists say that due to
atmospheric conditions that prevail in the Northwest during
summertime, it would be virtually impossible for such an event to
ever occur. Climatological records do not indicate any year when it
was cold and wet enough in early July for snow to occur in Klamath
Falls.
The fact that many people believe this legend could
be the result of a number of factors, including the following:
People may be remembering another holiday when snow
fell, such as Memorial Day or Easter.
People may have seen hail or sleet fall on the Fourth
of July and likened it to snowfall.
People may have been camping or traveling in the
mountains during the summer and seen some form of precipitation that
looked like snow.
