Legend: There are no falls in Klamath Falls.
Status: True or false, depending how one
defines "falls."
Discussion: Originally known as Linkville, the
city of Klamath Falls adopted its new name in 1893. The name was
inspired by a series of low falls and swift rapids on Link River.
Before 1920, the most impressive set of falls fell from a basalt
reef located about 100 yards south of the Link River Dam. A series
of hydropower and irrigation developments diminished the falls over
a period of several years. By 1923, some were calling for
another change, this time to drop the word "falls" from the city's
name (see
news story). The question of whether there are falls in Klamath
Falls has been a matter of debate ever since.
A remnant of the falls can still be seen along the
Link River Trail. For more information on this topic, see the Klamath
County Museum's
falls brochure.
