Mystery Photo No. 2 -- Lumber Wagons

What we knew about this photo:
Most of the loaded wagons are headed north. Stukel
Mountain appears in the distance on the left. The
presence of power poles indicates a date after
1895. The lack of buildings suggests a date
before 1905.
What we didn't know: What
road are these wagons on? Where
have these wagons come from with this lumber, and
why is there one board sticking up in the air on
each wagon? The upended boards clearly must have
served some purpose, but what was it?
What we've learned: The
upended boards were used to keep tension on chains
that were wrapped around the loads of lumber,
binding them together. This photo appears to have
been taken on a road where Patterson Street now
runs, about three miles southeast of Klamath Falls.
