Visit on-the-ground sites
of the Modoc Indian War

For a first-hand look at where the Modoc Indian War of 1872-73 took place, head to Klamath Falls, Oregon, where you can plan day-trips to various sites in the region.

The Klamath County Museum at 1451 Main St. in Klamath Falls has a full exhibit on the Modoc War, complete with maps, diagrams and artifacts from the war. Open year-round. Click here to see location in Panoramio.

The Lava Beds National Monument, about 50 miles south of Klamath Falls and just south of the California state line, preserves the key sites associated with the Modoc War, including Captain Jack's Stronghold. Open year-round. Click here to see location in Panoramio.

The Fort Klamath Museum, about 35 miles north of Klamath Falls, marks the site where the Army based its operations during the Modoc War, and where four Modocs were hanged after the war. Open summer months only. Click here to see location in Panoramio.

The opening battle of the Modoc Indian War was fought near the point where Malone Road crosses Lost River today. An important spot to visit on your way to the Lava Beds. Click here to see location in Panoramio.

The Malin Historical Society has produced a brochure and map providing directions to Modoc War sites in the area about 30 miles southeast of Klamath Falls.
