Shown below are links to a series of records known as the Don Fisher
Papers. The Fisher Papers include nearly 1,900 pages of
correspondence, reports and other documents related to the Modoc
Indian War.
Little is presently known about how the Fisher Papers were produced.
It is apparent that a considerable amount of work was done to
compile original records from the Modoc War, and have them
transcribed - a project that was apparently overseen by Don Fisher,
who served as supervisor of the Lava Beds National Monument in the
1930s.
Very few copies of the Fisher Papers
(shown at left) are known to exist. Anne Ogle
donated a copy to the Klamath County Museum in 1967.
The museum's copy of the Don Fisher Papers were scanned in January
2012 by Karen Caverly, a history major at Eastern Oregon University
in La Grande, Oregon. The scanning project was a joint effort of the
Klamath County Museum and Eastern Oregon University. Copies of the
digital files are being archived at both institutions.
Each page - with a few exceptions - in the Fisher Papers was stamped
with a page number. The pages were divided into 11 bound volumes,
with the single page numbering system extending through all 11
books. A few pages were skipped during the process of
stamping. The 11 files below correspond to the 11 bound paper
volumes.
Many of the pages in the museum's copy of the Fisher Papers also
bear a handwritten number that appears to indicate separate
documents. However, the handwritten numbers are inconsistent, and we
suggest the reader disregard them.
The Klamath County Museum has formatted the digital copies of the Fisher Papers as pdf documents.
NOTE: The pdf documents are text-searchable (Ctrl-F), though in some cases
the type was not readable. As a result, the search function does not
function perfectly. The reader is advised that names are often
spelled a variety of ways. Furthermore, Toby (sometimes spelled Tobe)
Riddle is occasionally referred to as "Frank Riddle's squaw."
Commercial use of these pdf files is prohibited without prior
permission of the Klamath County Museum.
