Leonard Case, a philanthropist from Cleveland, Ohio, traveled to
Fort Klamath, Oregon, in 1873 to witness the
execution of four Modoc Indians who had been convicted in the murders of Gen. E.R.S. Canby and Rev. Thomas on April 11, 1873. Traveling with Case
was his assistant, Henry Abbey.
Case kept one diary
covering the entire trip, while Abbey recorded two diaries along
they way.
