On-Site Sanitation Division

What is an OSSD System?

An on-site sewage disposal system (OSSD) is designed to biologically treat wastewater and keep sewage off the ground surface and out of the ground water.

There are three main types of on-site sewage disposal systems:

STANDARD OSSD - Consists of a septic tank and drain field.

CAPPING FILL OSSD - Consists of a septic tank and a drain field, covered by a soil cap.

SAND FILTER OSSD - Conventional Sand Filter consists of septic tank with pump, sand filter treatment unit with lining, and drain field. Bottomless Sand Filter consists of a septic tank with pump and a sand filter treatment unit without a lining (no drain field).

A site evaluation is required to determine the appropriate system type for each property. Site characteristics such as groundwater levels, slope, vegetation, and soils are observed and recorded in the site evaluation report.
