The primary mission of the Klamath County Information TechnologyDepartment is to provide and support the information technology required by other departments to help them serve the public. Our secondary mission is to provide the information collected and generated by other departments directly to the public through the Internet and other media such as files on CDs.

IT works with the Klamath County Computer Steering Committee (KCCSC) in selection of platforms and applications. The KCCSC is comprised of personnel from various county departments who have in depth knowledge of computer application and/or county business practice. County departments make computer needs known to the KCCSC via written request. The KCCSC compiles these requests and convenes a meeting at which the requests are either approved or disapproved. The decision to approve or disapproved is based on 1) the cost/benefit of the request to the department and/or to the county 2) the availability of KCCSC funds and 3) the availability of ITpersonnel to implement the request. Requests approved by the KCCSC are then presented to the Klamath County BOCC for authorization. Once the Klamath County BOCC authorizes the request(s), IT then proceeds with the implementation.

The funding for computer systems may come from the KCCSC budget, the MIS budget, the department budget, or from grant monies. Regardless of the funding source, all purchases of computer system components must be approved by either the KCCSC or (for relatively small purchases) IT, and then authorized by the Klamath County BOCC.

Applications systems within Klamath County are a mixture of those developed "in-house" by IT and commercial systems that have been purchased. Experience has shown that there are advantages and disadvantages to each. The best source for an application is evaluated on an individual basis.

The basic framework (infrastructure) of the Klamath County system is now in place and components are added to extend the availability of needed information to county departments. Workstations and file servers are added or upgraded in small quantities. The infrastructure is extended as time and monies permit. The long-term goal of IT is to make any County data available where it is needed, when it is needed and how it is needed.
