The Klamath County Tobacco Prevention & Education Program is participating in activities that will reduce youth access to tobacco products, create tobacco-free environments, decrease tobacco advertising and promotion and link tobacco users to cessation resources.

Reducing Youth Access:

Youth access to tobacco relates to the availability and accessibility of tobacco products to underage buyers. Even though it is now illegal in all states to sell tobacco to minors, the reality is that minors have easy access to tobacco products. Klamath County Tobacco Prevention & Education Program provides information and education regarding laws and encouraging ID checks to local retailers. The Program also provides information and education to parents, children and families about what they can do to reduce youth access.

Creating Tobacco Free Environments:

The goal of creating tobacco free environments includes clearing the air of secondhand smoke, prohibiting smoking in public places, and educating the public regarding secondhand smoke. The implementation of these measures could mean the public would be protected from exposure to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke,  children would not be encouraged to use tobacco and more tobacco users would choose to quit. The Klamath County Tobacco Prevention & Education Program provides education and information to schools, businesses and the public regarding the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Decreasing Advertising and Promotion:

The tobacco industry spends about $17 million a day in the U.S. alone in advertising and promotion of tobacco products. A large portion of this advertising targets our children and teens. In Oregon, teens are the fastest growing population of tobacco users. An estimated 30 teens in Oregon start smoking every day. The Klamath County Tobacco Prevention & Education Program provides information, education and cessation resources for youth. The Program also educates the public regarding the negative effects of tobacco promotion and advertising.

Linkage to Cessation Resources:

Linking tobacco users to cessation resources is an integral strategy in a comprehensive and effective program to reduce tobacco use. To meet this important need, statewide and local efforts are needed to increase the capacity and quality of available resources for cessation.
