Klamath County District
Attorney's Office
Edwin I. Caleb, District
Attorney
Anti-Terrorism Task Force
A Klamath County task force
aimed at promoting and coordinating local anti-terrorism efforts has been
created through the Klamath County District Attorney’s Office and the Klamath
County Sheriff’s Office. The task force includes local law enforcement
agencies, emergency-planning agencies and representatives from a number of
governmental and private sector businesses who have joined the District
Attorney’s Office to share an interest in preparing for and responding to
potential terrorist attacks.
Michael Mossman, United States
Attorney for the District of Oregon, pointed out the importance of coordinated
responses at the federal, state, and local level. Mr. Mossman stated that
Klamath County’s Anti-Terrorism Task Force is already being cited around the
state as a model for other regions to adopt.
Four short-term goals have
been created which this group will focus on:
q First, to determine the best way for citizens with suspicions or concerns to convey those to law enforcement and emergency responders and to publicize that information
q
Second, to implement community emergency
response teams coordinated by the sheriff’s office with staff support from the
district attorney to help neighborhoods receive training on disaster
preparedness and response, and to be watchful for suspicious activity
q Third, to open channels of communication between public health, law enforcement, civic leaders and emergency responders
q Fourth, to bring together responsible agencies so that
Klamath County is in a position to apply for and receive federal funds
dedicated to helping local communities plan and prepare for possible threats,
including bio-terrorism. Any efforts in this area would include the
Klamath County Health Department.
Meetings
are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the Klamath County Courthouse
Community Meeting Room from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Anyone interested in the work
of the Klamath County Anti-Terrorism Task Force may contact Brandi Ensign at
the District Attorney’s office 883-5147 ext. 3162.
